| Aspen Exotics are the proud breeders of the Neapolitan Mastiff. We have some of the world's best imported bloodlines in our breedings. We are very selective in our planning of all our litters. We take great pride in the fact that our Mastini retain the truly unique appearance that breeders over the centuries in Italy worked so hard to achieve and maintain. Those traits are as follows: |
| The Neapolitan Mastiff also know as the Neo, Italian Mastiff, Mastino, and the Mastino Napoletano in Italy. Italy is recognised as the official home of the Neapolitan Mastiff. Italy is also know for producing some of the world's finest Mastini. The Neo has only been recognised as a breed since 1949. Although history can trace it back to 3000 years before Christ. Historical figure, Alexander the Great was instrumental in creating the Mastini. He was know to have crossed the giant Macedonian and Epirian war dogs with the short-haired "Indian" dogs to create the Molossus. The Molossus was characterized by having a wide, short muzzle and a heavy dewlap. These dogs were used primarily in battle against tigers, lions and man. The Molossus is easily recognised as the forefather of the Mastino Napoletano. The Roman invasion of England introduced access to large mastiff dogs which were then crossed with the formidable war beasts of Rome. The descendants from these dogs have many traits in common. They are large powerful animals, and are devoted to their families. Superior defenders of person and property. The Mastino is the stay-at-home type. They are devoted to their families but are bred to detect unwanted intruders and deter them from returning. Many say that the Mastino's serious looks are enough to deter any intruder. The Neo is a very intellectual breed, quick to please it's master. Uncanny ability to learn at a very rapid pace. No harsh punishments or corrections are required here. Just a disapproving tone is all that is needed. |
